Tuxedo UFSD is celebrating “Arts in Education Week.” The national program, which kicked off Sunday, is designed to recognize the “transformative power of the arts in education” and to encourage elected officials and school leaders to support equitable access to the arts. Here at the district, our art and music teachers use every class to connect to their students through the arts.

🎼 Music is filling the hallways at George F. Baker High School as the choir and orchestra begin their first rehearsals of the school year. Under the direction of Clayton Chan, the choir is dynamically singing in rounds and the orchestra is getting heavy, powering their way through a rendition of a metal arrangement.

🥁 Over at George Grant Mason Elementary, newest music teacher, Cailin Cienki, got her 1st graders in the rhythm on Monday by handing out handheld percussion instruments. Students “shaked, rattled and rolled” as they learned about quarter and eighth notes. When Cienki asked the class if they have heard of Bach, she had to smile when she was met with several students making chicken noises, bock bock!

🎨 Down the hall from Cienki, Mr. Stankiewicz and his students are preparing for the “International Peace Day” on Wednesday September 21. Colorful paper pinwheels, featuring designs and illustrations, will be planted on campus during an event featuring presentations and words of peace from students. 2022 will mark the 14th #InternationalDayOfPeace at GGM.

From Pre-K to 12, every week is arts in education week in the GGM and GFB school buildings.
