The Tuxedo Union Free School District welcomes our newest K-12 English as a New Language (ENL) teacher, Katie Box! A world traveler with a passion for languages, Katie brings not only her expertise in education but also a finely-tuned grasp of the Spanish language, perfected while living and teaching abroad.
After studying in Spain during college, Katie spent a year teaching English in a La Rioja based primary school as part of the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. Upon returning to the U.S., she taught Spanish at Duanesburg Jr./Sr. High School in upstate New York for three years.
Katie has found the transition from classroom teaching to providing one-on-one ENL support incredibly rewarding. “Being able to focus on each student individually allows me to really understand their unique strengths and challenges, and tailor my support to meet their specific needs.”
Growing up in rural upstate New York, Katie attended a small high school similar in size to George F. Baker, so she feels right at home in the smaller setting. "I like it here in Tuxedo. The students are very nice, and the community is supportive."
Katie connects with her students by tapping into their interests, learning about their hobbies, and using games to make learning fun. These approaches are all part of her larger goal to create a comfortable and welcoming environment for her students. In the coming months, Katie hopes to organize a multicultural event at school, where her English Language Learners can celebrate and share their native cultures with each other.
For now, she’s happy to share her international experiences with students, bridging cultures and helping them thrive in their English-learning journey.
