students talking with students

Meet Miss Scarlet and Mr. James, the newest faculty members at George Grant Mason Elementary, and your fourth grade teachers for a day!

Friday’s teaching gigs came via the joint fourth grade “Wow Board.” Students get the opportunity to add their names to one of the board’s squares whenever they are caught doing something right; it could be helping a fellow classmate or an academic breakthrough spotted by their teacher.

Just like a game of bingo, Ms. Bock and Ms. Rota pull a number and letter, then award the student whose name falls in the corresponding square. For the final prize of the year, the teachers selected two squares off the grid.

To start the day, Mr. James was on ELA duty checking work in Ms. Rota’s room, while Miss Scarlet was next door reviewing answers and clues for a “mystery math” assignment. At midday the student teachers flipped roles and classrooms.

All the work and activities assigned on Friday were selected by Mr. James and Miss Scarlet during a lesson planning session with Rota and Bock, who helped coach their new colleagues along from the back of the classroom.

“Its not as easy at it looks, huh?” Rota joked to Mr. James as he picked partners for a Chromebook based project.

“No,” he said behind a smile and a head shake.

But have no doubt, Mr. James and Miss Scarlet had a fun day, and so did their students, er…. classmates.
