Student Spotlight

For our May student spotlight, we caught up with three George F. Baker High School juniors enrolled in the Orange Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Education program in Goshen. Joseph Hubert, Daniela Gonzalez and Emaan Malik (Pictured L-R) are currently taking classes in the BOCES Culinary Food Trades program, which prepares students for careers in the food and beverage industry and in the hotel and restaurant business. During a recent visit to the GFB library, Hubert, Gonzalez and Malik talked about their experiences and future plans. Hubert, a CTEC honor roll student, hopes to open his own restaurant someday. But first? “Culinary school,” he adds with a big smile.

Gonzalez and Malik have loved their time in the culinary program,  but both will be making a change at CTEC for their senior year.  They are enrolling in the BOCES Dentistry Program. Malik says while she enjoys culinary classes and the experiences that have come with it, she misses something important to her, “working with and helping people.” Gonzalez had a similar response, expressing the desire for an opportunity that allows her to interact with different people each day. In the dentistry program, Gonzalez and Malik will complete a clinical rotation and assist in actual dental procedures.

BOCES has provided Joseph, Daniela and Emaan with career ready experience. Paired with their Tuxedo education, they are off to a great start!
