Student with trees

The average tree takes about 30 to 40 years to mature, about 12 more than the fourth graders at George Grant Mason Elementary. But thanks to this budding group of arborists, several young saplings are off a good start.

To celebrate Arbor Day, the Rotary Club of Suffern donated baby trees to GGM, and it was the job of our teachers and students to prepare them for planting. Fourth grade students were wrist deep in dirt this morning as they scooped out soil to fill the plastic bag their tree would rest in.

With assistance from Ms. Bock and Ms. Rota, the young horticulturists made sure the saplings were secure enough for the bus ride home. Once there, the task is to pick the perfect spot to plant it. While students waited their turn, they worked on a chrome book based science lesson; studying the several varieties of trees that populate our planet. (The word deciduous was overheard several times). Thank You to the rotary club and George F. Baker High School teacher Mr. Reilly and the interact club for facilitating the donation!
